“David Gonyer Wins The 2011 Rockingham Ruritan Spelling Bee”
The region’s top spellers faced off Saturday in the studios of WVPT for a chance to move on to the “National Scripps Spelling Bee.”
Eighth Grader David Gonyer came out on top in today’s competition with the winning word of “Gazelle”. David is in the Eighth Grade, and attends Cornerstone Christian School in Harrisonburg. David now moves on to the National Scripps Spelling Bee held in Washington D.C. June 1st and 2nd.
The 2011 Rockingham District Ruritan Regional Spelling Bee was once again co-sponsored by WVPT and The Daily News Record. The spelling bee featured students from across the region, and was broadcast live from the Studio’s of WVPT.
The Second Place Winner was Alexandra Price. Alexandra is in the Eighth Grade, and attends Thomas Harrison Middle School. Coming in at Third Place in the spelling competition was Anthony Malabad. Anthony attends Wilbur S. Pence Middle School, and is in the Seventh Grade
As part of winning the Rockingham Ruritan District Spelling Bee, David will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C for himself and a parent to attend the 2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee. David also received a Webster’s Third New International Dictionary, a Samuel Louis Sugarman Award: $100 Series EE U.S. Savings Bond, a plaque to commemorate the event, and a certificate from Best Buy for a new computer.
