2010 Rockingham Ruritan District Regional Spelling Bee is held at WVPT
Winner moves on to National competition in June.

The 2010 Rockingham Ruritan District Regional Spelling Bee was held today (Saturday, March 6th ) at the studio of WVPT. Twenty students from around the region competed for an opportunity to advance to the National Scripps Competition held in Washington D.C. The winner of this year’s bee was Andrew Taylor from Blue Ridge Christian School. The second place runner up was Mia Karr from Thomas Harrison Middle School, and coming in third, was Hannah Craun from Wilbur S. Pence Middle School.
Andrew received a brand new laptop, and all expense paid trip for himself and a parent or guardian to go to Washington D.C. and participate in the National Spelling Bee. Andrew said that weekly practice sessions with his father helped him prepare for the competition. The winning word this year was “HUSTINGS”.
This year’s Rockingham Regional Spelling Bee was Sponsored by the Rockingham District Ruritan Club, and co-sponsored by The Daily News Record, and WVPT. David Mullins, President and General Manager of WVPT was thrilled to be the host of the spelling bee. “It is an honor to be able to broadcast such a wonderful community event.”
The Scripps National Spelling Bee will be held June 2 – 4 in Washington D.C.
