There once was a time, some years before the ascendance of rock 'n' roll on Top 40 radio, when popular music veered sharply from the mainstream to sample American roots-music traditions. Inspired by the songs of Pete Seeger and The Weavers, this “music of conscience” or “folk” music found its greatest expression during the early 1960s in the songs of an emerging Greenwich Village group known as Peter, Paul and Mary.

In this DVD release of their PBS TV special Carry It On, the trio recalls the beginnings of the cultural revolution of the '60s when music emerged as a unifying force amidst the turbulent currents of social change. Carefully chosen archival footage traces the group's phenomenal career, as a musical and personal story is told through selected concert and interview segments.

DVD, PETER, PAUL AND MARY: THE HOLIDAY CONCERT
This musical holiday celebration features the legendary Peter, Paul and Mary singing Christmas carols, Hanukkah songs, spirituals and some of their greatest hits. Joining them are the 160-voice New York Choral Society, a 40-piece orchestra, and children from New York’s Little Red School House. Peter, Paul and Mary are, undoubtedly, one of the most cherished musical ensembles of all time, and The Holiday Concert showcases the warmth and universal reach of their music.

Highlights of the concert include performances by children from Mary’s elementary school accompanying the trio on “Light One Candle,” as well as Peter’s Hanukkah song written especially for the show. Renowned conductor emeritus Robert DeCormier of the New York Choral Society makes an appearance, sharing the stage with the trio as his former student, Mary Travers, sings gloriously with Paul and Peter, completing a remarkable musical circle.

This PBS special has become a decades-long holiday music tradition. Long anticipated by fans, the concert was only available on VHS and is currently out of print. The Holiday Concert made its DVD debut in October 2011.
