SUPER WHY, a PBS children’s program promoting childhood literacy, WVPT and the Valley Baseball League have partnered to present a Home Run Reading program this summer.  WVPT will be at two home games of each of the Valley League teams with gently read books for children ages 2-10.  Encourage your child to be a homerun reader by reading with them.  Encourage your child to write an essay on baseball or on becoming a sports announcer.  The Valley League and WVPT along with SUPER WHY will recognize youth this summer in all of these areas. Click on the titles below for the contest entry forms.

  1. Batter Up Reading – For children between the ages of 2 and 10, complete one of the following by July 3rd and you could be recognized at a local Valley League game:
    • For a BASE HIT read or read with the child 12 books
    • For a DOUBLE read or read with the child 24 books
    • For a TRIPLE read or read with the child 30 books
    • For a HOME RUN read or read with the child 36 books
  2. “On Deck” Sports Essay Contest – If you are between the ages of 9 and 12 and love sports, write a 200 word or less, essay sharing: What Baseball Means to Me. Submit entries by July 3rd to WVPT. Winners will be recognized by WVPT at a local Valley League baseball game and awarded with Reading Goodie Baskets.
  3. “Time to Rally” Sports Announcer Contest – If you are between the ages of 10 and 14, write a 300 word or less, essay sharing: Why I Want to Be a Sports Announcer. Submit entries by July 3rd and winners have the opportunity to announce at a nearby Valley League game.
